This evening is dedicated to Indian music. We are very pleased to be able to experience the two classical Indian musicians Paramananda Roy (bansuri) and Subrata Manna (tabla) in the modern Monastery Gut Saunstorf. Both musicians live in Kolkata and are currently on tour in Germany. They play classical North Indian music and classical Hindustani music.
Together with the musicians Nushin Morid and Deva Parkin, they create a composition between western-experimental, classical Indian music and touching mantras. We got a touching taste of this musical connection during the Silent Love Advaita Retreat with the wisdom teacher OM C. Parkin in India in February this year. It was there that the desire for further collaboration arose and thus the spontaneous impulse for this concert.
Paramananda Roy
He learnt the flute from his father, late pandit Gopal Roy. Further started learning Pandit Partha Chatterjee and Padma Bhushan Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty as a scholar of ITC Sangeet Research Academy. He is currently a musician tutor of ITC Sangeet Research Academy. He has done his masters in music from Rabindra Bharati University. He is a regular performer in All India Radio and Doordarshan having a B-High grade. He is an empanelled artist of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (I.C.C.R.). He has performed for the EZCC (Eatern Astern Zonal Cultural Centre), SNA (Sangeet Natak Academy) and many other organizations all over the country. He is also the tutor of instrumental music at the Academy of Classical and Folk Arts, IIT Kharagapur.
Subrata Manna
A disciple of great Tabla maestro none other than Pandit Shankar Ghosh Subrata took initial training from late Sri Sunil Bhattacharya of Benaras gharana at the age of eight.Subrata also has been receiving training of Karnatic tala system under the guidance of eminent Miridangam maestro Pandit S. Sekhar.
Subrata is an M.A in Percussion music from Rabindra Bhararti University, Kolkata. He has been playing all over in India and abroad in many prestigious concerts and conferences and festivals successfully. Subrata has played almost in all the major music conferences in Kolkata and played in many other prestigious music conferences in different parts of India. Subrata has toured successfully in U.S.A, U.K and many European countries like and many Middle East countries. Subrata had lead a team of vocalist and Kathak dancer and a Sitar player to represent Hinduism through North Indian classical music in of one of most prestigious International festivals called ‘MUSICASACRA’ in south of Germany and Eigenarten Festival, Hamburg, Germany and in Cervantino Festvial, the biggest music festival of South America.
Nushin Morid
is a painter and sculptor and music has always been an important part of her path. During eight years of intensive work in a capella choir under the direction of Dimitris Liatsos, she discovered her solo voice. Inspired by seminars with the Dutch singer Toiny Tune, she experimented with free vocal improvisation in small ensembles. Her voice work with Tim Jones brought her closer to classical Indian music and its form of improvisation. In particular, his training in the perception of singing from effortlessness and presence opened up new spaces. For her, mantras and improvisations are an invitation to become still, to connect with something greater than herself. For her, meeting other musicians in this way is a mindful and joyful journey into the unknown. She accompanies spiritual events, ceremonies and retreats of all kinds, both alone and with various musicians. Guitar, Monochord and Shruti are her companions.
Deva Parkin
was born with her voice and music. As a self-taught multi-instrumentalist, she moves musically from rock to experimental and spiritual music. Her sounds touch people’s hearts.
