Parvathy Baul

Satsang Performance | with Maa Parvathy Baul

Wisdom Songs and Divine Dance

Wed 31. July 2024 | Gut Saunstorf Monastery

It is a pleasure and an honour for us to welcome Maa Parvathy Baul this summer.

As a sadhika (spiritual practitioner), teacher and lineage holder of the Baul tradition, the depth of Parvathy Baul’s mesmerising performance is rooted in her deep spiritual practice.

Maa Parvathy Baul is one of the most recognised Baul performers in the world.

Having offered satsang-performances in over 40 countries in some of the most renowned venues around the world such as The Noh Theatre (Kyoto), The World Music Institute (New York City), Musée du Quai Branly (Paris), The National Theatre (Hungary),

Parvathy Baul is carrying forward the legacy and mission of her gurus to build a bridge between the ancient world of the spiritual Masters, and the modern world.

“My solo performances are steeped in tradition. They are not meant for entertainment, but are a transformational tool – bringing an awareness towards the self in a very meditative way.”

The satsang performance is an opportunity to experience the sweetness, love and depth of the Baul tradition. Maa Parvathy Baul will offer Baul wisdom songs. She will also speak about their deeper meaning and allow us to have an insight into the Baul tradition.

About the Baul Tradition

Baul is an ancient yogic spiritual tradition of India. To practise Yoga and to encrypt their spiritual realisations in the form of poetry is at the centre of their practise. Bauls uphold Guru Sishya relationship as sacrosanct. They take up practices such as sacred alms gathering in order to disseminate Baul teachings to the society. Bhakti, devotion, is the essence of Baul path. To serve the guru with devotion is to serve the divine, is one of their central tenets.

Bauls uphold the Guru (Master) – Sishya (student) relationship as sacrosanct.  Bhakti, (devotion) is the essence of the Baul path. “To serve the Guru with devotion is to serve the divine” is one of their central tenets.

The origins of Baul can be traced back to the 8th century Hindu Nath tradition which pioneered Hatha Yogic practices, and to Sahajayana groups of Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism. Thus, Bauls were originally known as Sahajiyas.

Later on, the devotional practice of Vaishnava saints from Bengal greatly influenced Sahajiyasand they came to be known as Vaishnava Sahajiyas. Thus, Baul emerged into a unique stream of spiritual practice which was a successful synthesis of Yoga and Bhakti.

Gradually the interface with Sufi practitioners gave birth to yet another sub stream called Fakiri.

This event is organised by the Baul Association Europe and the OM Foundation Inner Science.
